Design & Technology Award in Engineering
Level1/2 Award in Engineering
Course Overview
This is a new qualification and is significantly different to other GCSE Design and Technology courses which the school has offered in the past. The course is a Level 1/2 Technical Award and is not a GCSE. However the new exam structure means that it is equivalent to a GCSE and equal weighting is given to the Award. The course is more practically based than the GCSE but still contains a significant amount of theory and design work.
The course will use IT to produce high quality Design Work and Products as well as practical assignments. The examination is broken down into 3 Units. These are Engineering Design, Producing Engineering Products and Solving Engineering Problems. They are assessed in 2 different ways, an internal assessment marked by the teacher and an external exam.
Exam Profile - Subject conent and assessment
Unit 1 Engineering Design
Pupils will analyse engineered products and then use this information to design solutions to meet specific design requirements
This will account for 30 hours of the total time for the course and will be assessed by the teacher but then moderated by the exam board.
Unit 2 Producing Engineering Products
This is where pupils will apply a variety of skills, including practical ones to produce an engineered product.
This will account for 60 hours of the total time for the course and is assessed by the teacher and again moderated by the exam board
Unit 3 Solving Engineering Products
This is a written exam where pupils will need to have an understanding of engineering processes and material properties. This knowledge will then be used and applied to solve problems in the exam.
This is an external examination and will be a 1hour 30 minutes exam.
