Kirkby Stephen Grammar School recognised nationally for disadvantaged pupil outcomes

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School has been formally recognised by the Secretary of State for Education for its exceptional outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

The Rt Hon Bridget Phillipson, Secretary of State for Education, has written to the school to commend the achievements of pupils and staff following the 2024/25 academic year. The letter places Kirkby Stephen Grammar School among the very best schools nationally for attainment outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.

In her letter, the Secretary of State praised the dedication of staff and the hard work of pupils, highlighting what can be achieved when ambition and commitment come together. She also encouraged the school to continue sharing its effective practice to help raise standards across the wider education system.

The recognition reflects the school’s sustained focus on high expectations, inclusive practice and ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of background.

Nicola Tweddle, Head of School, at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, said:

“This recognition is a real credit to our pupils, who work incredibly hard, and to our staff, who are deeply committed to supporting every young person to achieve their best. We are incredibly proud of the outcomes our pupils have achieved and of the inclusive culture that underpins everything we do here at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School.”

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School is part of Cumbria Education Trust, which works collaboratively across its schools to share best practice and improve outcomes for all pupils.

The letter also aligns with the Department for Education’s Regional Improvement for Standards and Excellence programme, which supports schools to both benefit from and contribute to system-wide improvement through collaboration, professional networks and the sharing of effective practice.
