Progress Reviews

At Kirkby Stephen Grammar School we have focused on ensuring assessment supports the learning of every individual as well as giving parents a clear understanding of their child’s progress.

There will be two points in the year when parents will receive a progress report. One of the reports will have additional detailed comments from their form tutor. Behaviour for learning is also reported during every reporting cycle.

The reporting schedule for 2025/2026 is:

Progress Review One Progress Review Two
Year 7 February May
Year 8 February May
Year 9 December June
Year 10 March July (after Year 10 exams)
Year 11 December (after Trial exams) April (after Trial exams)
Year 12 February July (after Trial exams)
Year 13 November February (after Trial exams)

Progress reviews will typically include the following information:

  • Behaviour for Learning: a single measure of a student’s engagement, behaviour, organisation, punctuality and attendance. It is measured against our school’s three core values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. There are three possible grades, Exceptional, Expected, and Below Expected. Further details of the Behaviour for Learning criteria can be found here.
  • Current Predicted Grade: Reviews include a prediction of the grades students are likely to achieve at the end of Year 11 (or 13 on Key Stage Five reports). This is based on all the evidence available to the teacher at the point of writing the review. We do not share predicted grades with students until reports in Year 9.
  • Target grade: This is the end of Key Stage Four/Five target grade that students should be aiming for as generated by Fischer Family Trust. We do not share target grades with students until reports in Year 9.
  • Progress indicator: We encourage all students to make as much progress as they can during their time at KSGS. Based on students target grades they will be highlighted on their progress review (Years 7-11) as making ‘Some Progress’ (SM), ‘Embedding Progress’ (EP), ‘Very Good Progress’ (VG) and ‘Exceptional Progress’ (EX).

  • Actions for improvement: If students are not meeting their target within a subject, they are provided with an action. This action has been identified by each subject teacher as a positive method of improving performance and should be acted upon.
