The Maths curriculum at KS3 aims to develop and extend the knowledge of the students and promote a positive attitude towards the subject, including confidence, enjoyment and perseverance.
Our curriculum is planned to cover all key mathematical concepts of number, algebra, shape and space and data handling from the national curriculum.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice, with increasing complex problems over time. This will develop pupils’ conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
Students are placed into sets upon entry to the school based on prior attainment. However, there is flexibility of movement between sets during the academic year. Students receive 6 hours of teaching over a two week timetable and are assessed regularly by their class teacher. In addition to this there are 2 formal assessments throughout the year.
Extra-Curricular activities
Some students are entered for the UKMT Maths Individual and Team Challenges at Junior Level.
